HOW TO ASK QUESTIONS ?

I. INTONATION (raising the tone of voice at the end of a sentence)

Raise your voice at the end of an affirmative sentence.
Par exemple
For example

Tu es américain.
Tu es américain ? (Are you  American ?)

Il travaille à Miami.
Il travaille à Miami ? (Does he work in Miami ?)

Vous avez des enfants.
Vous avez des enfants ? (Do you have children ?)

II. EST-CE QUE...

Add "est-ce que" before a sentence.
"Est-ce que" would be kind of a "do or does" in English.

Tu es professeur.
Est-ce que tu es professeur ? (are you a teacher ?)

Elle habite à Paris.
Est-ce qu'elle habite à  Paris ? (do you live in Paris ?)

Vous aimez voyager.
Est-ce que vous aimez voyager ? (do you like to travel ?)

III. INVERSION (invert verb and subject pronoun)

This is the formal way to ask question in French. You just have to put the verb before the subject pronoun.

Tu as une maison.
As-tu une maison ?

Il est intelligent.
Est-il intelligent ?

Vous parlez français,
Parlez-vous français ?

IV. PRONOMS INTERROGATIFS (Interrogative pronouns)

If you expect another answer than Yes or NO, you will need to know first the interrogative pronouns in French.

Qui (who)
Quoi ( what)
Comment (how)
Où (where)
Quand (When)
Pourquoi (Why)
Combien (how much-how many)

Now you can ask open questions.
- with intonation : Tu manges quoi ?
                              Il habite où ?
- with est-ce que:  Quand est-ce qu'elle voyage ?
                              Comment est-ce que nous payons ?
- with inversion :  Pourquoi étudiez-vous le français
                             Qui sont-elles ?

So always start with the interrogative pronoun except with the intonation type of questions.


SOME COMMON USEFUL FRENCH QUESTIONS

Comment t'appelles-tu? (what's your name ?)
Comment vous appelez-vous ? (what's your name ? /formal or plural)

Comment vas-tu ? (how are you ?)
Comment allez-vous ? (how are you ?/formal or plural)

Où sont les toilettes ? (where is the restroom ?)
Où sont les taxis ? (where are the taxi ?)
Où sont mes bagages ? (where is my luggage ?)

Où habites-tu ? (where do you live?)
Où habitez-vous ? (where do you live?/formal or plural)

Qu'est-ce que c'est ? (what is it ?)
Qu'est-ce qui se passe ? (what's going on ?)

Est-ce que tu parles anglais ? (do you speak English ?)
Est-ce que vous parlez anglais ? (do you speak English ?/formal or plural)

Combien ca coûte ? (How much does it cost ?)
Combien c'est (how much is it ?)

Peux-tu m'aider ? (can you help me ?)
Pouvez-vous m'aider ? (can you help me ?/formal or plural)

Convert the affirmative sentences in French questions. The vocabulary was studied in the previous beginner episodes, go check it if you need help.
